Oscar Pickett-Prieto

Drawing inspiration from religious iconography and lived-queer experiences, Pickett-Prieto creates comical yet grotesque characters that exist in an alternate reality. Their use of humour elicits a reconsideration of the odious and the repugnant as something that is too-often dismissed and contemned.

Pickett-Prieto incorporates a palette of gradated skin tones and elongated, distorted brushstrokes while examining the uncertainty and tension within their juxtaposition of the frivolous and the solemn. Like actors on a stage, they position and contort their figures within uncanny spaces that seem to transcend the passing of time, materialising a sentiment that many of us cannot verbalise, a void that many don't know how to share.
